Barrel or Cube Sauna? What to Compare Before You Choose

Barrel or Cube Sauna? What to Compare Before You Choose

A curved barrel or a modern cube: the shape is often the first thing you notice when choosing an outdoor sauna. It helps define the look of your garden, but it is only one part of the decision.

Use the shape to create a shortlist, then compare the actual dimensions, bench plan and specification of each room.

Consider how the room sits in your garden

A barrel sauna has a rounded profile that can become a distinctive feature beside planting or a garden path. Cube designs offer a box-like silhouette, although corners and roof details vary between models. You may prefer that outline beside a terrace or a home with simple architectural lines.

Try marking the proposed footprint on the ground. View it from your home, the garden entrance and your usual seating area. This is a useful way to judge proportion before relying on a product photograph.

Check usable space inside

External width and depth do not tell the whole story. A curved wall changes the room’s cross-section, while a cube’s internal arrangement depends on its wall construction, benches and heater position.

Compare drawings rather than assuming one shape always offers more room. Look at headroom where you will sit or stand, the doorway and the space between benches. Ask whether the stated dimensions include an entrance porch, roof overhang or other exterior feature.

Look closely at the glass

A glazed door, a rear window and a full glass facade create different views and different levels of privacy. Think about the direction the room will face and what will be visible from nearby paths or windows.

Confirm the glazing included in the chosen configuration. If you request more glass, have the supplier review the heater specification for the final design. Room construction and uninsulated surfaces matter when selecting heater power.

Compare the complete specification

Do not assume that the shape alone determines heating speed, energy use or weather suitability. Review the timber, wall construction, roof covering, ventilation and heater documentation for the models you are comparing.

A photograph may show options that are not part of the base package. Check the bench layout, heater, controls, stones and any exterior seating against the written quotation. Ask what care the exterior requires and what installation instructions are supplied.

Make the decision around your priorities

If the rounded appearance is what draws you in, start with the Barrel Saunas collection. If you prefer a box-like outline, compare the Cube Saunas collection. In either case, choose a specific model that fits your site and seating needs.
